A Definition of Natural Beauty

19The term “natural beauty” gets thrown around often enough that many people don’t actually know what it is. Is it a way of avoiding having to enhance one’s appearance for public presentation? Does it mean that a natural beauty only uses things made from nature? Or is it someone who can look great no matter what? To some degree or another, the answer to all of these questions is yes.

To start, natural beauty doesn’t require anything. If someone is said to have natural beauty, that person can get up in the morning and still look as though just a change in clothes ought to be enough to appear dazzling. The person in question doesn’t need to look like a super model. After all, many super models spend hours dealing with hair, clothing, make-up, and even the right way to stand for a picture or show. No. Natural beauty doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with specific body features. A little enhancement never hurts to bring forward someone’s natural radiance.

Even though being naturally beautiful is defined as looking great without enhancement, that doesn’t mean that someone doesn’t or shouldn’t use clothing, styling, or make-up to enhance what’s already there. For most natural beauties, styling is usually much lighter than for everyone else. In the case of make-up, many natural beauties use colors that blend with the skin so well that it looks as if the extra pigment was there to begin with. Hair styles are usually simple for most days, and clothing isn’t always something from the latest fad. For many people with natural beauty, dressing is a matter of what feels good as opposed to what looks good. Ironically, someone who dresses to feel good often looks great!

So what about those enhancers? Are they only made from nature? This is usually the case. Many natural products are priced beyond the capability of some people’s finances. Therefore, many people wanting natural products get what they can at the best price and fill in the gaps as best as possible with other products. Sometimes, natural enhances are as simple as not using hair spray and sticking to shampoos that have natural extracts. A lot of people use home remedies to take care of minor problems that occur in the skin and hair. Diet and exercise are great ways of treating the appearance from within. It’s always easy to tell who feels healthy and who doesn’t based on how they present themselves, and using natural products from the inside out is a great way to feel healthy.

Natural beauty is no mystery. It’s easily within everyone’s grasp, and no one has to portray themselves as hippies to achieve it. Being naturally beautiful is more about presenting oneself in a style that suits that person individually without major fuss.

Discover the Costa Brava’s Natural Beauty

18Holidays to the Costa Brava first became popular during the 1950’s when Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra first visited the region. Despite the rapid growth in tourism over the last 60 years, it has still managed to retain much of its Catelonian charm and tradition.

The resort of Santa Susanna is perhaps the perfect example of exactly what Costa Brava holidays have to offer. It is one of the Costa Brava’s best loved holiday destinations despite officially being located in the lesser known Costa Meresme. Split into two halves the touristy sea front offers fantastic restaurants and lively bars while just inland you are greeted with traditional Catalonian style. Picturesque narrow streets are lined with pretty chapels, ancient watch towers and whitewashed houses. The locals are very welcoming and there are a few authentic Catelonian restaurants offering tasty traditional cuisine.

Modern hotels, bars and restaurants line the promenade where you’ll find life is a bit more touristy and livelier. You can walk right along the promenade into neighbouring Malgrat de Mar.

The locals love the beach life here which is always a good sign. There are plenty of water sports on offer here for those energetic enough to join in or simply lie back, relax and top up your tan.

Santa Susanna lies between the clear blue Mediterranean waters and a beautiful national park called the Massif Montenegro. Horse riders, mountain bikers, nature lovers and keen walkers will love spending days discovering the natural beauty on their Costa Brava holidays.

The whole town takes to the streets during August as a month long carnival celebrates the life of the town’s patron saint, Santa Susanna. Dancing, feasting, games and competitions fill the days and nights here as the whole family are encouraged to join in with the Sardana, a local folk dance.

The whole family will love the rides and slides of Water World, Europe’s largest water park just between here and Lloret de Mar.

Marineworld just nearby is home to over 300 animals and dolphin and sea lion shows will enthral young and old alike. The beautiful city of Barcelona is within easy reach and well worth a visit whilst you are here.

The Costa Brava gets quite cool during the winter months but exceptionally hot during the summer. Early and late season is the best time to take cheap holidays in the Costa Brava when the weather is a little cooler, the resorts a little quieter and the kids are still in school. Tour operators are often looking to fill empty hotel beds and seats on planes at this time, so you might just be able to grab yourself a bargain.

Mother Nature’s Dirty Trick

45Dopamine. Adrenalin. Serotonin. When you’re falling in love, your brain produces these hormones by the gallon. This flood of hormones is why we’re “addicted” to our sweetheart, can’t think of anything else, and are blinded to his or her all-too-soon-painfully-obvious flaws. They make us want to have sex. That triggers other hormones, including the Oxytocin and Vasopressin that cause us to bond and form long-term relationships. So far, so good, right? Well, here’s the dirty trick: The hormones produced when we have sex interfere with the brain’s ability to produce the falling-in-love hormones. That’s why the lusty-can’t-get-enough-of-you, high-on-love feeling goes away.

What?? You mean we’re programmed to fall in love, have sex and bond, and our “reward” is that the blinders come off and we realize our Perfect 10 is more of a 6 or 7? ‘Fraid so. Turns out love isn’t as much an affair of the heart as it is Mother Nature’s way of ensuring that we fall in love, mate and reproduce to ensure the continuation of our species. Okay. But, since we’re hardwired to couple, wouldn’t you think Mother Nature would have been more generous in doling out relationship survival skills? Sorry. You’re on your own. That’s why when the falling-in-love stage ends, we think we got it wrong, and why so many divorces occur in the first three years of marriage.

Knowing all this may take some of the romance out of falling and being in love. But isn’t it reassuring to know that you’re not alone? And knowledge is power. Knowing that the falling-in-love stage is just that, a stage, helps you prepare for the being-in-love long haul. Here’s how:

Focus on the positive. Yep, you’re going to notice that your sweetie has faults. Guess what? Your sweetheart is noticing the same thing about you. You’re both wonderful. And you’re both flawed. Stay focused on the “wonderful.”

Remember that differences are just that, not matters of right and wrong. Being married isn’t hard work but being “right” is. You’re not always going to see eye-to-eye. That’s okay. It’s also hard work to remodel your partner, and it doesn’t work so don’t even try.

Remember that words hurt. Be careful what you say and how you say it. Words can cause mortal wounds. They can never be taken back.

Remember the power of nice. Make it a point to be kind to each other and to do things that say, “I love you.”

Remember that the little things count big time. Most marriages that fail suffer death by a thousand cuts that are not individually lethal but cumulatively sap the life out of once vibrant relationship. Little hurts will destroy a relationship as effectively as infidelity. It just takes longer. Likewise, little acts of kindness go a long way to keeping the marriage solid.

Bottom line: Every couple experiences the end of the falling-in-love high. It’s inevitable. That’s not the “real deal.” It’s Mother Nature up to her tricks. The “real deal” is the quiet but profound and enduring love that sustains you throughout the years. Work on nurturing that love and accept that the fireworks will and do end.
